Can't Fight the Fed Investors piled into equities today following the Fed's 0.25-point rate cut the prior day. Dovish comments from Fed Chair Powell fed hopes of at least one more rate cut this year with some calling for two. Economic data was better than expected with Initial Jobless Claims falling 32k to 231k, while Continuing Claims eased 7k remaining above 1.9 million. The Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index jumped to 23.2, its highest mark since January. Stocks rallied at the opening bell and the DJIA, S&P 500, NASDAQ, NASDAQ 100, Russell 2000 and Philadelphia Semiconductor Index all posted new all-time highs. The different sectors were mostly higher led by strength in Technology (XLK) and Industrial (XLI), while Consumer Staples (XLP), Consumer Discretionary (XLY) and Energy (XLE) were lower. Despite the rate cut, yields ticked higher on the jobs number and a report that last week's jump in initial jobless claims was due to fraudulent cases in Texas. The rate on the 10-year Treasury closed at 4.123%. Giving a boost to tech and semiconductor names was a +22.77% spike in shares of Intel (INTC) on a $5 billion investment by Nvidia (NVDA), which jumped +3.54%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index advanced +3.60%. CrowdStrike (CRWD) was another big winner gaining +12.82% after announcing new AI products. The DJIA ended the day with a gain of 124.10 points (+0.27%) and settled at 46142.42, while the S&P 500 added 31.61 points (+0.48%) finishing at 6631.96. the tech heavy NASDAQ jumped 209.40 points (+0.94%) closing at 22470.73. The small cap Russell 2000 tacked on +2.51% for its first new high since November 2024. Breadth was positive with advancing issues beating advancing issues 1.8:1 on the NYSE and 2.5:1 on the NASDAQ. Volume was above average with advancing volume 65% on the NYSE and 74% of the NASDAQ. The VIX eased 0.02 (-0.13%) and closed at 15.70. Crude oil prices slipped 0.37 (-0.58%) and the October contract closed at $63.68 a barrel. Gold prices lost 39.80 (-1.07%) and finished at $3678.00 an ounce. Bitcoin (BTC) closed the session at $117,500. While the major averages struggled to finish mixed yesterday, investors jumped back in today on hopes of additional rate cuts sending the different indexes to record highs. The small caps outperformed, but don't count out the big cap tech and Mag 7. They were sharply higher as the allure of what AI brings to the table continues to see stocks such as Alphabet (GOOGL), Meta Platforms (META), Nvidia (NVDA) and others at or approaching new highs.
