New Highs to Start Holiday Shortened Week Investors were in a festive mood to open the shortened holiday week sending the S&P 500, NYSE, NASDAQ and NASDAQ 100 to new record highs. Helping to boost equities was Canada calling off its Digital Service Tax to reopen trade talks with the US, and the Federal Reserve hinting that a rate cut in September was likely. Yields nudged lower with the yield on the 10-year Treasury easing to 4.241%. The CME Group FedWatch now projects a 90% probability of a September cut. Almost every sector was higher led by strength in Technology (XLK), Financial (XLF) and Communication Services (XLC). Banks were higher after getting a clean bill of health from the Federal Reserve's annual stress test which opens the door for dividend increases and buybacks. Energy (XLE) and Consumer Discretionary (XLY) were the laggards, the latter on weakness in Tesla (TSLA) and Amazon (AMZN). The major averages rallied into the close and finished at the highs of the day. The DJIA gained 275.50 points (+0.63%) and settled at 44094.77, led by strength in Goldman Sachs (GS). The S&P 500 added 31.88 points (+0.52%) and closed at 6204.95, while the NASDAQ gained 96.27 points (+0.47%) finishing at 20369.73. Breadth was positive with advancing issues beating declining issues by 358 units on the NYSE and 1.4:1 on the NASDAQ. Volume was above average with advancing volume 66% on the NYSE and 62% of the NASDAQ. The VIX increased 0.41 (+2.51%) and closed at 16.73. Crude oil prices eased 0.53 (-0.81%) and the August contract closed at $64.99 a barrel. Gold prices added 32.00 (+0.96%) and finished at $3319.00 an ounce. Bitcoin (BTC) closed the session at $107,550. It was a solid start to the week and a good day to end the first half of trading as the major averages were higher across the board. Investors are looking at looming rate cuts and less regulation that should keep a floor under equities and add to GDP in the second half. Tomorrow JOLTS is out, and the consensus is for 7.3 million job openings, while the ISM Manufacturing and Services Indexes are out. July is historically a positive month and positive momentum should keep prices rising over the near-term. Earnings releases to watch for on Tuesday include: MSC Industrial (MSM), Constellation Brands (STZ) and Greenbrier (GBX). Tuesday's Market Moving Economic Calendar: PMI Manufacturing Final, ISM Manufacturing Index, Construction Spending and JOLTS. By David L. Blake, CMT Significant Numbers To Watch DJIA
